Why the Problem Sums Get Harder and What To Do Before They Do

Something shifts in Maths between Primary 3 and Primary 4. The numbers don’t get bigger. The thinking does.

Calculations give way to multi-step problems. Concepts appear in combination. And for the first time, the right answer isn’t enough as students are expected to show the reasoning behind it.

This is the stage where a child either builds a reliable toolkit for unfamiliar problems, or learns to fear them. Our programme is designed to make sure it’s the former where we give students not just the methods, but the confidence to reach for them when it counts.

What the Programme Covers

Four carefully sequenced lessons focused on the concepts and heuristics that matter most at this stage:

Lesson 1 — Assumption and Guess and Check

Students learn how to apply these two foundational heuristics to problem sums where the unknowns are not immediately apparent. The emphasis is on understanding the logic behind each method so students can decide when and how to use them, not just replicate a memorised approach.

Lesson 2 — Simultaneous and Substitution

Students develop the ability to work through problems that involve two or more related unknowns, learning to set up and solve them systematically using our Shorter-Better-Faster methods rather than relying on trial and error.

Lesson 3 — Fraction of Remainder Model and Repeated Entity Model

Students work through the fraction-based problem types that consistently challenge students at this level, building a clear visual and conceptual understanding of how these models work and when to apply them across different problem structures.

Lesson 4 — Patterns

Students sharpen their ability to identify, extend, and apply number and figure patterns, developing the systematic observation skills needed to handle pattern-based questions confidently and accurately.

All students receive: Exclusive TTA Smart Study Notes covering key heuristics and worked examples.

By the end of the programme, students will:

✔ Understand the key concepts and heuristics across the P3 and P4 syllabus not as isolated tricks, but as a connected toolkit

✔ Know how to approach problem sums systematically using our Shorter-Better-Faster methods

✔ Stop losing marks to careless reasoning and understand not just what the answer is, but how to arrive at it reliably

✔ Apply the right heuristic to the right problem! Assumption, Guess-and-Check, Fraction of Remainder, and more

✔ Close the specific conceptual gaps identified from this year’s school papers

✔ Experience what it feels like when a difficult sum finally makes sense! Because that moment of clarity is what builds lasting confidence

Why Families Choose Us

Over the years, we have had the privilege of supporting more than 10,000 students in building stronger academic foundations and genuine learning confidence.

Our teaching approach has been recognised by local and international media, including The Straits Times, Channel NewsAsia, Lianhe Zaobao, Bloomberg, and South Korea’s Educational Broadcasting Network, which flew to Singapore specifically to document what we do in the classroom.

Select your preferred class below and give your child access to a programme that Singapore families have trusted for years, and that international media have travelled here specifically to see.

Download our full June Holiday Programme Brochure for a complete overview of what's available across all subjects and levels here.

We look forward to helping your child build something that lasts.
