Primary 3 & 4 (2026 Cohort): P3/4 Mathematics Headstart Programme

The December Holiday P3/4 Headstart Programme introduces lower-primary students to the key mathematical ideas that form the foundation for upper-primary success. Each lesson blends conceptual understanding, real-world application, and Think Teach’s signature visualisation strategies to help students see Mathematics as both logical and engaging.

Lesson 1 – Length, Mass, and Volume

Students begin by exploring the fundamentals of measurement through Length, Mass, and Volume. Lessons are designed around relatable, hands-on scenarios that show how these quantities interact in real life. Learners discover how to compare, estimate, and convert measurements accurately — building the visual and numerical intuition essential for future topics like Ratio and Rate.

Lesson 2 – Time, Fractions, and the Before-After Model

In this session, students learn to perform Time calculations, deepen their understanding of Fractions and learn the Before-After Model heuristic method. This early exposure to a model-based approach teaches them how to organise problem data, identify key relationships, and perform logical step-by-step reasoning — all of which prepare them for more advanced word problems at the upper levels.

Lesson 3 – Advanced Model Drawing, Excess and Shortage

Building on prior model-drawing skills, students are introduced to more sophisticated models that can represent multi-step word problems. Through Excess and Shortage scenarios, they learn how to translate complex relationships into visual frameworks, manipulate unknowns, and reason efficiently. This lesson nurtures flexibility and confidence when faced with longer or layered problem sums.

Lesson 4 – Area and Perimeter

The final lesson focuses on Area and Perimeter, where students explore how to deconstruct and rearrange shapes using Think Teach’s Rearrange-and-Form technique. By connecting geometry with numerical reasoning, they gain the skills to solve for unknown dimensions and link visual diagrams to arithmetic expressions — a critical skill for handling higher-order geometry questions later on.

Programme Highlights

  • Builds strong conceptual understanding of measurement, fractions, and geometry

  • Introduces model-based thinking and structured reasoning at an early stage

  • Strengthens visualisation and problem-solving through guided examples

  • Provides an engaging, interactive approach that nurtures mathematical confidence
